Ghost job or job scam? How to tell the difference
Both are fake in a way, but they're not the same problem. A ghost job wastes your time. A scam is after your money or your identity.

The difference in one table
| Ghost job | Job scam | |
|---|---|---|
| Who's behind it | A real company | A fake employer, or someone pretending to be a real one |
| What they want | Usually nothing from you right now | Your money, your bank details, or your identity |
| What you lose | Time and energy | Money, and sometimes your identity |
| Typical sign | Old or reposted listing, vague role, no salary, silence after you apply | Requests for payment or personal details, rushed offer, no real interview |
Warning signs of a job scam
- 01They ask you to pay for anything: training, equipment, a background check, a "starter kit."
- 02They send you a check and ask you to send part of it back or buy equipment with it.
- 03You get an offer without a real interview, or the whole "interview" happens over text or a chat app.
- 04They want your bank details or ID numbers before you have a written offer.
- 05The pay is far too high for vague, easy work.
- 06They claim to be from a well-known company but write from a personal email address.
- 07They push you to decide fast, before you have time to check anything.
A real employer never asks you to pay to get a job. If even one of these shows up, slow down and verify the company through its own website before you reply.
If you think it's a scam
Stop replying, don't send money, and don't share more personal details. Report the posting to the job site where you found it. In the US you can report it to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. In the UK, report it to Action Fraud (or Police Scotland in Scotland). If you already shared bank details, call your bank straight away.
Signs of a ghost job
Ghost jobs are quieter: listings that stay up for months, keep getting reposted, have no salary and no named team, and lead to silence. The full list is in our guide: 8 signs of a ghost job.
