What is a ghost job?

A ghost job is a posting with little or no real intent to hire right now. Some are evergreen “always hiring” listings, some are reposts that never close, and some exist to collect resumes or make a company look like it's growing. You tailor an application, send it, and hear nothing, because there was never a seat to fill.

How common are they?

18–22%

of job posts are ghost listings: about 1 in 5.

  4. 04Vague scope and buzzwords."Dynamic self-starter, other duties as needed" instead of real responsibilities.
  5. 05No named team, manager, or reporting line.
  6. 06It isn't on the company's own careers page.Only on job boards? Be suspicious.

What to do instead

Spend your effort where it counts: postings with a real salary, a real scope, and a real person you can reach. Keep track of what you send, follow up once at two weeks, and let it go at three.

A note on honesty: none of these signs proves a job is fake on its own. Together, they're a strong reason to be careful. How accurate is Diogenes?
