Resume builder vs resume checker: which do you need?
They sound similar and do completely different jobs. One makes your resume look right. The other tells you whether it fits the job you're applying for.

What a resume builder does
A builder gives you a template and helps you fill it in: sections, fonts, spacing, sometimes AI-written bullet points. It's the right tool when you don't have a resume yet, when yours is years out of date, or when the formatting is so messy that it gets in the way of what you've done.
What a resume checker does
A checker reads the resume you already have against one specific job posting. It looks for the skills the posting asks for that your resume never mentions, bullets with no numbers, and anything a recruiter or screening software would trip over. It's the right tool when you're sending applications and hearing nothing back.
Side by side
| Resume builder | Resume checker | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts from | A blank page or a template | Your existing resume plus one job posting |
| Main job | Layout, formatting, wording | How well you match this specific job |
| Best when | You have no resume, or yours is a mess | You're applying and hearing nothing back |
| Watch out for | Fancy layouts some screening software reads badly; AI bullets that all sound the same | A score is a guide, not a guarantee. No tool knows what a recruiter is thinking |
So which one do you need?
If you already have a decent resume, you probably don't need a new design. You need it to match the job in front of you. Use a builder once, to get a clean document. Then check it against every job you seriously apply to, because each posting asks for something slightly different.
One thing to keep in mind with any template: plain, single-column layouts are the safest. Some screening systems struggle with text inside graphics, tables, or text boxes. Our ATS guide covers what that software really does, and which fears are myths.
Where GetDiogenes fits
We don't build resumes. The Checker reads yours against one job the way a recruiter would: a score, red-pen flags, and what to fix first. It costs 1 credit, and you get 3 free credits when you sign up, no card needed.
Check my resume against a job →Full disclosure: we make a resume checker, so weigh our view with that in mind. Before tailoring anything, make sure the job is real: 8 signs of a ghost job.
